Snare Hydro sits on the traditional lands of the Tłıcho People.
NTPC was honoured this week to assist with the portage of the Trail of our Ancestor paddlers as they travel through our hydro sites. We also provided a lunch of Bison Stew & Bannock for all travelers.
The Trails of Our Ancestors program aims to teach Tłıcho˛ youth about their cultural heritage and way of life, as well as strengthen unity among the youth, elders, families, and communities. The program focuses on preserving the Tłıcho language, culture, and way of life, and renews spiritual growth, abundance, and gathering to renew kinship, revive stories, and share knowledge. The program offers training opportunities in various skills required on the land, such as geographical mapping, names, stories, recording, canoe safety, first aid, firearm safety, GPS training, policy, and basic survival skills. The Tłıcho people have a traditional lifestyle that involves seasonal nomadic travel by canoe for activities such as harvesting caribou, collecting hides for clothing and shelter, and fishing. The program encourages the youth to honor their ancestors, respect the land, and experience the traditional spirit that they will carry with them.
Special thanks to NTPC employees Shawn Brennan, Blake Noksana, James Dall, Jamie Tennant, JP Landry & Scott Adlem-Qillinuq for their help with transporting of paddlers from Snare Forks to Snare Rapids. (40 kms).
