A partial outage occurred in Tuktoyaktuk, beginning just before 6:00 pm on Easter Monday. The outage occurred when a third-party vehicle took down a guy wire on a distribution line. There was a short-lived full community outage but power was quickly restored to most customers -- unfortunately, approximately 160 customers remained without power.

Planning began to get a line crew into the community to restore power but this proved more challenging than expected. Members of the line crew had already spent most of the day working on the new distribution line from the Inuvik High Point Wind site.

We were unable to find an available plane to charter and the highway to Tuktoyaktuk was initially closed due to high winds. The winds eventually weakened and the highway was reopened. Travel conditions were still challenging but the line crew was able to make it to the community shortly after 11 pm.

The crew began restoration work and power was fully restored to all customers by approximately 2:00 am.

Thank you to the team working out of Inuvik. Your efforts to support our customers in less-than-ideal circumstances is greatly appreciated.

On Friday, March 31, the Honourable Dan Vandal, federal Minister of Northern Affairs, Minister responsible for Prairies Economic Development Canada and Minister responsible for the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and our Minister, the Honourable Diane Archie, travelled to the Taltson Hydroelectric Facility for a tour and to discuss the importance of refurbishing and expanding this valuable asset. Welcoming our visitors and other members of the tour group were Cory Strang, Belinda Whitford and Dean Hendrickson.

Special thanks to employees who were on site to lead/support the tour. This included Neil Anderson, Hydro Plant Operator/Electrician and Patrick Stock, Casual Hydro Plant Operator. In the background, Andrew Ellis, Rick Scott, and Ken Bell also provided invaluable support to help make the tour a success.

NTPC constructs and operates winter roads to hydro sites each year to support operational and capital project requirements. Winter road construction typically begins in January, with roads in use from mid-February until early April.

Hydro Operations, Projects & Engineering, and the Heath Safety & Environment Divisions work together to coordinate the construction and use of the winter roads and support the required environmental licensing and reporting associated with the roads.

This year, roads are being constructed to Snare (Tlicho), Bluefish (Weatherby) and Taltson (Rowes) Hydro sites. The winter roads allow for annual resupply of fuel and other operational materials, as well as supporting the movement of large items required for capital projects during the upcoming fiscal year.
