A barbecue to recognize long service award recipients was held in Fort Smith on September 19. Award recipients were (from left to right): Kris Lantz, Powerline Person (five years); Neil Andersen, Electrician (five years); Duane Rohne, Powerline Person (30 years); and John Davenport, Hydro Plant Operator (30 years).

A total of 14 students, two teachers & two parent volunteers from Ndilo were at Jackfish earlier this week learning about electricity generation. Eileen Hendry led the tour while Jean-Guy was kind enough to join for additional crowd control and photography. The visit began in the meeting room, where the students learned about electrical safety using the Hazard Hamlet. A discussion about the different types of energy and how they can be turned into electricity was next on the agenda followed by a viewing of our short YouTube video about Power Generation in the NWT.
It was then time for hard hats and safety glasses for the walk outside to look at the substation and the Cat Plant. The highlight of the tour was putting in earplugs and venturing into the EMD plant, where one of the engines was running.
The visit ended back in the meeting room, where students looked at pictures of the hydro sites and saw the System Diagram "map" showing in real time where electricity was being generated.
Thank you to Eileen, Jean-Guy and all the employees at Jackfish who helped make the student visit a great success. Who knows....future electricians, engineers or health and safety officers may have been in in the group!
