Olympic Athletes Visit South Slave Schools

Biathletes Brendan Green and Rosanna Crawford have been visiting schools in the South Slave area this week, inspiring students with their message of dreaming big and working to make it happen. NTPC is proud to support Brendan in achieving his dreams, and we thank both Brendan and Rosanna for taking the time to help us reach out to students across the north with their annual schools tour.

Applying for interim power rates - Key Messages

  • NTPC recognizes that the cost of living is high in the Northwest Territories.

  • NTPC has applied for an interim rate of 4.8% while it completes a general rate application (GRA) to be submitted to the Public Utilities Board the end of June.

  • The GRA will apply for rates over a three year period with estimated increases being 4.8% in the first year, 4.0% in the second year and
    4.0% in the third year. This means about $10 per month if using 1,000 kWh in the winter or about $6 if using 600 kWh in the summer.

  • The main reason rates are increasing:

    • Inflation for both the next three years as well as catching up for two years when inflation was not build into rates

    • Declining sales – by about 2% over the past few years -- due to decreased sales, conservation, and possibly alternative energy sources where people are generating their own power.

    • Aging infrastructure – Power plants across Canada are aging and all utilities are facing the challenge of refurbishing or replacing old equipment.

    • Increased regulatory costs – water licensing and all the studies required to run hydro electric systems on rivers, rate regulation and the requirements of filing and responding to rate inquiries and hearings.

NWT Distracted Driving Law Changes

Changes to the NWT Motor Vehicles Act are coming into effect on May 1.  They will address distracted driving and speeding.  For more information click here.

Fort Simpson Career Fair - Yesterday

Local linesman, Clod and apprentice mechanic, Adrian accompanied Erin from Human Resources to the Fort Simpson Career Fair yesterday where they talked with students about the jobs we do here at NTPC.
