An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a systematic application of business management to environmental issues. An effective EMS can reduce operating and maintenance costs, identify potential liabilities, reduce incidental and penalty related costs, and provide assurance to NTPC, regulators, stakeholders, and northern communities that environmental risks are being managed and minimized. Through our EMS environmental management will be integrated into NTPC's daily operations.
NTPC developed its first EMS in 1998, which focused on completing environmental site assessments at all NTPC sites. In 2002 the focus of the EMS was placed on environmental, health and safety audits, environmental management measures, and site remediation. From 2003 to 2005 work was done to create an ISO 140001 compliant EMS, and in 2006 all EMS documentation was completed. Training is provided to all NTPC personnel bringing environmental awareness with NTPC to the forefront of all projects and initiatives.
