NTPC employees along with contractors from GE Energy, CorroJet and 62 DegreesNorth Medic participated in an emergency drill at Snare Forks that included confined space entry on Sunday, March 17. The exercise was held as part of the Unit 1 overhaul.

Scott Spencer, Chief Technical Officer and Mike Ocko, Director, Thermal Region travelled to the Sahtu during the last week in February to tour the plants and to discuss operations, maintenance and capital plans with the superintendents. Scott and Mike also had the opportunity to make courtesy visits with community leaders to hear any concerns they have. It was a great opportunity to see and hear first-hand the good work that NTPC employees are doing.
Matthew Killawee, owner of Frontier Field Engineering, is sponsoring a new $5000 undergraduate scholarship in partnership with the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation (CEMF). Matthew was formerly with NTPC’s Design Engineering Group and his company continues to work closely with our Thermal Operations Division.
The Nellie Giffin Engineering Award will be provided to a self-identifying female studying engineering full-time in an accredited engineering undergraduate program with a focus on electrical engineering or computer sciences engineering. Nellie Giffin was Matthew’s grandmother.
CEMF was established in 1990 in memory of the 14 women killed at École Polytechnique on December 6, 1989. The memory of those who lost their lives is kept alive through the scholarships, networking and promotional opportunities provided by the Foundation for the past 23 years.

Earlier today, the Federal Government announced that it would provide 75% of the funding for a new diesel plant in Sachs Harbour. Paul Grant, Interim President and CEO, was on hand for the announcement in Inuvik, joining Robert C. McLeod, Minister Responsible for NTPC and Michael McLeod, MP. The Government of Canada is contributing up to $7.4 million, with the Government of the Northwest Territories contributing up to $2.4 million. The project is being funded through the Government of Canada’s new Arctic Energy Fund, which supports energy security in Northern communities.
