A Job Safety Analysis (JSA) is a way to plan work and include safety.
JSAs must be done for jobs that:
- are complex enough to require written instructions;
- could (before controls are in place) reasonably result in a medical treatment injury or medium property/environmental damage; and
- don’t already have a Safe Job Procedure (SJP) in place.
JSAs are built using Form 2.2: Job Safety Analysis with the participation of all workers involved in the work.
JSAs include a step-by-step procedure. For each step consider:
- What hazards exist?
- What incidents could reasonably occur?
- How could the job step be done to avoid the incident?
- What controls are needed to eliminate (or at least minimize) the risk of harm?
- What is the risk after controls are in place?
- Use the included Risk Matrix.
- If risk is High or Extreme, work cannot take place until suitable controls are identified to reduce the risk!
Before work starts:
- Completed JSAs must be approved by the supervisor.
- All workers must review the JSA at the work site. Document this on the Tailboard Meeting form.
Remember:
- JSAs for repetitive or routine tasks need to be entered into Safe Job Procedure (SJP) format.
- Once an SJP is in place, a JSA is no longer needed.
- Contact your HSE Division when it’s time to build an SJP!
